Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Bed & Breakfast and a traditional hotel?
Unlike traditional hotels, which often offer standardized rooms and services, a Bed & Breakfast provides a more intimate, personalized lodging experience. B&Bs are typically smaller properties, often located in historic homes or distinctive buildings, where each guest room has its own unique character.
As the name suggests, breakfast is included in your stay, often freshly prepared and served in a welcoming, home-like setting.
At the American River Inn, we combine the charm of a historic Victorian inn with the comforts of modern hospitality. Guests can relax in our inviting common areas, enjoy our beautiful grounds, and experience a more personal approach to hospitality than they might find at a conventional hotel.
How is a Bed & Breakfast different from an Airbnb?
While both offer alternatives to traditional hotels, a Bed & Breakfast and an Airbnb can provide very different experiences.
Airbnb is a booking platform offering everything from individual rooms in private homes to entire houses and vacation rentals. Amenities and services vary by property, and guests are often responsible for their own meals and housekeeping.
A traditional Bed & Breakfast, on the other hand, is a hospitality business built around providing a welcoming, personalized guest experience. Accommodations are thoughtfully prepared, breakfast is included, and hosts are available to offer assistance, recommendations, and local knowledge.
At the American River Inn, you'll enjoy the charm and individuality of a historic property, freshly prepared breakfast, inviting common areas, and attentive hospitality, all while enjoying the privacy and independence of your own guest room.
It's the character of a unique getaway with the convenience and care of a professionally operated inn.
What amenities can I expect at a Bed & Breakfast like the American River Inn?
One of the delights of staying at a Bed & Breakfast is that no two are quite alike! B&Bs specialize in creating charming, memorable experiences that reflect the unique character of the property and its surroundings.
Some focus on the accommodations themselves, offering cozy fireplaces, antique furnishings, beautiful gardens, or inviting common areas. Others emphasize their location, providing opportunities to enjoy local history, outdoor adventures, scenic landscapes, or nearby attractions.
Because each property offers its own distinctive experience, amenities can vary considerably. While a freshly prepared breakfast and personalized hospitality are hallmarks of a traditional B&B, other features and services will depend on the individual inn.
At the American River Inn, our guests enjoy the charm of a historic Victorian property, comfortable accommodations, welcoming common areas, beautiful grounds, and a delicious breakfast each morning. Our location in the heart of California's Gold Country also provides easy access to historic towns, outdoor recreation, and local attractions. Each room is different and offers a variety of options. Please review each room description for additional details.
The beauty of a Bed & Breakfast is that you're choosing more than a place to sleep, you're choosing an experience.
Do you have a restaurant or bar on site?
While some Bed & Breakfasts offer on-site restaurants, bars, or additional dining services, most focus on providing comfortable accommodations and a memorable breakfast experience rather than full-service dining.
Because B&Bs are often smaller, independently operated properties, food and beverage offerings vary considerably. Some provide afternoon refreshments, evening wine receptions, or special dining experiences, while others offer breakfast exclusively. Many serve as the base camp for your exploration of the region you're visiting.
At the American River Inn, a freshly prepared breakfast is included with every overnight stay. Although we do not operate a restaurant or bar, our location in historic Georgetown puts guests within easy reach of local restaurants, cafés, and saloons.
We are always happy to recommend local favorites so you can experience the flavors and hospitality of California's Gold Country!
What time is check-in?
Check-in at the American River Inn is between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM.
We understand that travel plans don't always fit neatly into a schedule! For guests arriving after 6:00 PM, we offer convenient self-check-in arrangements.
If you anticipate arriving outside our regular check-in hours, please contact us in advance so we can make the appropriate arrangements and ensure a smooth and welcoming arrival.
Is smoking allowed at the American River Inn?
The American River Inn is a smoke-free indoor property. Smoking is not permitted in guest rooms, bathrooms, or any indoor common areas.
For the comfort and convenience of our guests who smoke, we have provided several designated outdoor smoking areas throughout the property.
We kindly ask that guests use only these designated areas and dispose of smoking materials responsibly to help us maintain a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for everyone.
Thank you for helping us preserve the comfort and historic charm of the American River Inn!
Can I invite local friends or family to join me for breakfast?
We love bringing people together! However, our breakfast service is reserved exclusively for registered overnight guests of the American River Inn.
As a traditional Bed & Breakfast, our dining service is designed around the guests staying with us, allowing us to provide a freshly prepared breakfast and a relaxed, personalized experience each morning.
While we're unable to accommodate outside visitors for breakfast, we're always happy to recommend wonderful local cafés and restaurants where you can gather with friends and family.
Thank you for your understanding!
Is a reservation required?
While reservations are encouraged, they are not required! The American River Inn welcomes walk-in guests, subject to room availability. To ensure a smooth and welcoming arrival, we accept new reservations and walk-in guests until 5:00 PM daily. We are unable to accommodate new bookings after this time.
Guests with existing reservations are welcome to arrive during our regular check-in hours of 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, or arrange for a later arrival through our convenient self-check-in process.
We recommend booking in advance, particularly on weekends, holidays, and during popular local events, to ensure your preferred accommodations are available.
Do you offer room service?
As a traditional Bed & Breakfast, the American River Inn does not offer conventional room service. In fact, we believe that one of the most enjoyable parts of the B&B experience is stepping outside your guest room to enjoy the inviting common areas, share stories, and perhaps make a few new friends along the way!
Our freshly prepared breakfast is served in our dining room or on the veranda in the warmer months, where guests can relax, enjoy a delicious meal, and experience the warm, communal atmosphere that makes staying at a Bed & Breakfast so special.
While we encourage guests to enjoy their meals in our designated dining areas, we understand that circumstances sometimes call for a little extra care. If you're feeling unwell or have special needs, we're happy to arrange a breakfast tray delivered to your room.
We kindly ask guests to avoid bringing food into their rooms whenever possible. This helps us protect our historic property, maintain a clean and comfortable environment, and discourage unwanted visits from our local woodland critters!
After all, some of the best memories of a Bed & Breakfast are made outside your room!
What is a room with a "shared" bathroom?
As a historic 1853 mansion, we have a variety of rooms available to suit every traveler. Guest rooms with shared bathrooms are a charming tradition in many historic Bed & Breakfasts, reflecting an era when private bathrooms were not a standard feature of every bedroom.
At the American River Inn, many of our guest rooms feature private bathrooms, but like any home, a few access a shared bathroom located near the guest room. These bathrooms are located in main hallways and are shared with other rooms in this category. "Shared bath" guest rooms come with toiletries, robes and towels for your convenience and our shared bathrooms are fully equipped and maintained to the same standards of cleanliness and comfort as our private bathrooms. Guests enjoy the same welcoming accommodations and amenities at a more economical rate.
We clearly identify rooms with shared bathrooms during the booking process so you can select the accommodations that best suit your preferences.
A little old-fashioned charm, without sacrificing comfort!
Can I bring my pet?
American River Inn welcomes pets (up to two) at no additional charge. Because all of our rooms are different, we strongly recommend you contact us to discuss the best room options for your situation; while most of our rooms can accommodate pets, we do reserve pet-free room options to make sure we can support all guests. And as with all guests, extra charges may apply to cover any excessive cleaning, hair removal or other "messes".
